Job Description:
Summary The Office of Student Financial Aid at Iowa State University is seeking a Data Analyst I or Data Analyst II to provide research and data analysis for institutional leaders and data preparation for required reporting.
The Data Analyst provides timely data to the Director of Student Financial Aid to direct the strategic use of student financial aid.
The team contributes to a university wide culture of data-informed decision making by collaborating with the offices of Enrollment Research and Analytics, Institutional Research, and Information Technology to provide relevant data and analysis to campus partners and campus leaders.
Duties for the Data Analyst position include maintaining the financial aid database by weekly downloading and storing new files; assist with data validation for transfer to new platform; creating reports and conducting analysis using a variety of data sources and tools (e.
g.
Power BI, Cognos 11, MS Excel, MS Access, Stata, Workday, etc.
); compiling institutional data for internal and external reports and data submissions; maintaining and creating new data visualizations and reports for administrators and the university community utilizing MS Excel, Power BI, and Workday; request custom IT reports for appropriate award year to assist with annual compliance reports/surveys; assign accounting codes to awards for tracking and reporting purposes; preparing reports and analysis of institutional data and survey results; Create templates in MS Excel to assist with award calculation/tracking; providing support in compiling, managing and analyzing data to inform departmental policy discussions; and responding to ad hoc requests from constituents across campus.
The university seeks a professional with a commitment to and understanding of the academic mission, possess critical thinking skills to ensure consistency and accuracy of methods employed, attention to detail, and possess the ability to explain data to multiple audiences with differing levels of understanding.
The Data Analyst will have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team and must have the capacity to work well in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
Must be self-motivated and exhibit patience in supporting the identification, resolution, and documentation of process issues.
This position will be filled at the I or II level.
Data Analyst I Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree and is a PS807 pay level.
Data Analyst II Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree and 3 years of related experience and is a PS808 pay level.
Level I Example of Duties Gathers operational data to examine past organization performance.
Assist in the preparation, cleansing, and verification of data.
Perform basic data manipulation and analysis techniques.
Develops and analyzes organizational data to quantify the competitive performance of business segments, evaluate potential operational changes, and design new approaches and methodologies.
Applies and integrates statistical, mathematical, predictive modeling and business analysis skills to manage and manipulate high volume data from a variety of sources.
Recommends actions for future developments & strategic business opportunities, as well as enhancements to operational policies.
May be involved in exploratory data analysis, confirmatory data analysis and/or qualitative analysis.

o Trains and assists users, managers and technical staff regarding access, use and storage of data and maximizing database design effectiveness.
o May be involved in exploratory data analysis, confirmatory data analysis and/or qualitative analysis.
