Job Description:
Iowa State University Library is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time (40 hours per week) Library Assistant III.
As a member of the Access Services team at ISU Library, this person provides circulation and reference services to the ISU community and is responsible for providing a safe environment within the library.
They train and functionally oversee student employee daily tasks, and provide excellent customer service at our main service point and throughout the building.
The Library Assistant III serves as the primary supervisor on duty during evening and/or weekend library hours.
This position is responsible for the opening and/or closing duties of Parks Library and conducting safety rounds throughout the building.
The successful candidate can both work independently and function well within a team, provide excellent customer service in a variety of situations, multi-task with frequent interruptions, resolve problems in a timely manner, and readily respond to changing circumstances.

Thanksgiving Break Winter Break Spring Break Finals Week University Holidays Summer Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities Area Management (30% of Time) Ensures the security of the Parks Library building and its collections, and the safety of people using the building.
Implements library safety and security policies as well as general conduct policies; carries out emergency procedures calmly and effectively.
Understand relevant emergency policies and procedures (library and university).
Responds to emergencies during working hours.
May be asked (if available) to respond to emergencies during non-work hours.
Acts as liaison to ISU Department of Public Safety.
Prepares and files Incident Report forms describing security incidents, emergencies, and the condition of the building.
Performs security rounds throughout the building and reports unusual conditions found to the appropriate unit.
Conducts frequent security rounds in assigned areas.
Assists or oversees the opening and/or closing of the library.
Circulation & Research Support (30% of Time) Oversees and performs daytime, evening, and/or weekend circulation functions.
Provides high-level customer service to all patrons, resolving concerns and complaints within library and university policies.
Provides reference and technical assistance to patrons as needed.
Refers high-level questions to appropriate staff.
Student Supervision (25% of Time) Functionally supervises student employees; assists with training, assigning work to, and checking work of student employees and, in the absence of the Evening Supervisor (Manager Library Services), may implement initial disciplinary steps as laid out by policy.
Informs student employees of work standards and expectations and holds them accountable.
Contributes to student employee evaluations by sharing observations with student supervisors and with other staff as needed to provide consistent management.
Projects (10% of Time) Provides support for library project work within and outside the department Other Duties as Assigned (5% of Time) Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities In-depth knowledge of unit's routines, functions, policies, procedures, and forms.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff and library users, orally and in writing, including the ability to draft procedures, policy recommendations, and user education materials.
Knowledge of library, academic, and bibliographic vocabulary.
Skill in utilizing a computer, software, online systems, and conventional office equipment.
Ability to respond to a variety of queries from library users, staff, and outside agencies requiring judgment and interpretation of unit and institutional policies.
Ability to accurately follow and interpret oral and written instruction and exercise judgment in its application.
Ability to organize workflow and prioritize multiple tasks for self and others.
Knowledge of and ability to apply the principles of supervision.
