The National Centers for Animal Health (NCAH) is comprised of three separate entities:
National Animal Disease Center (NADC) - The NADC conducts basic and applied research on selected diseases of economic importance to the U.S. livestock and poultry industries.
Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB) - The CVB is responsible for implementing the Virus-Serum-Toxin Act of 1913 as amended in 1985 to ensure that veterinary biologics (vaccines, bacterins, antisera, diagnostic kits and other products of biological origin) available for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of animal diseases are pure, safe, potent, and effective.
National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) - The NVSL is responsible for diagnosis for domestic and foreign animal diseases, diagnostic support for disease control and eradication programs, import and export testing of animals, training, and laboratory certification for selected diseases.
The Common Services Division provides services to all entities of the NCAH plus the other support units.
This position is located in Utility Plant Maintenance and Repair.

The incumbent:
Performs and/or assists in operations, repairs, maintenance and monitoring, according to prescribed methods, a bank of multiple mechanically fired, gas and oil-fueled, water and fire tube boilers, whose maximum generating capacity is 320,000 lb. of steam per hour at 125 lb. per square inch pressure located at multiple installations.
Assists in operation and repair of 2, dual fuel turbines that produce 4,700 kw and multiple mechanical driven electric generators with a capacity of 15,000 kw located at multiple installations.
Assists in operations and monitoring of a power management controls system which controls electric utilities for the site.
Assists in the operation, repair, maintenance and monitoring of multiple banks of centrifugal and absorption chillers whose total capacity is 9,800 tons located at multiple installations.
Assists in the operation and repair of air compressors, fire pumps, domestic water booster pumps, cooling tower water using standard chemical tests, and determines the necessary treatment and chemicals to be used.
Physical Requirements: Work requires close hand-eye coordination, active walking, prolonged periods of standing on concrete floors, climbing, bending, reaching, and working in cramped positions or crowded areas. May be required to lift equipment and materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
Working Conditions: Incumbent is exposed to varying abnormal temperatures and conditions both indoors and outdoors. Works in areas where equipment is in continual operation, where noise levels are abnormal and prevail. Subject to possible infection, mechanical injury, gas, cuts, bruises, fumes, dirt, and grease, possible exposure to contagious diseases, pathogens, and other environmental hazards. Must wear appropriate safety equipment and comply with laboratory protocols. Required to wear full face respirator when working in biological control areas. Facial hair restrictions may be required in order to comply with proper operation of personal protective equipment. Works on rotating shifts to ensure 24 hour utility plant coverage.
