Construction Foreman

Foremen fulfill an extremely vital role in the construction industry and to the success of Story Construction Co. because most of the work is actually put in place by Foremen and their crews. Working through a Foreman position provides a very beneficial developmental step in all career paths in the construction industry.
Summary:Foremen are members of Story?s management and supervisory teams and are directly responsible for supporting their crews with the ?Six Elements? and are responsible for articulating a sense of urgency by helping the crew members analyze the operation to develop a mutually agreed on production goal. It is the Foreman?s responsibility to support the creation of a detailed step level plan with the crew, to support the crew?s goal, and to hold them accountable for meeting their goal. Foremen are responsible for helping create an environment that will promote development and retention of their crew members through mentoring and training. Foremen also should help promote the commercial construction industry to their crew members as a rewarding career choice utilizing Story?s career path.
Foremen need to evaluate and understand their position and current competency level and continually improve their communication, technical, teaching and delegation skills. Foremen must demonstrate their leadership skills and successfully supervise their crews by taking the initiative to plan each work activity ensuring that quality work is put in place safely and productively.Job-Specific Competencies:
Safety:
+ Comply with the Company Safety Policy.
+ Help develop and comply with all other safety policies, procedures, guidelines and rules, specifically the Foreman?s responsibilities, as defined in Story?s Accident and Prevention Plan.
+ Comply with all of the safety regulations associated with the work currently being performed under their supervision.
+ Mentor and train each new employee assigned to their crew to ensure that they complete their work in a safe and productive manner.
+ Take the initiative to reduce the possibility of accidents and injuries by managing the hazards that cannot be eliminated.
+ Include JSA?s (Job Safety Analysis) in all step level planning for each activity.
+ Conduct pre-work meetings with their crews before starting work each day and when conditions change during the day.
?Six Elements?: Foremen are expected to be generally competent and actively working on improving their ability to provide their crews with the ?Six Elements? (Information, Environment, Manpower, Materials, Tools, and Equipment) as described below:
+ Information
+ Read and understand contract documents (contract drawings, specifications, shop drawings, etc.)
+ Understand and use project management tools (i.e. step level planning, APPC Boards, trend charts, cost reports, CP2.0, etc.)
+ Determine when additional information is needed for their particular operation.
+ Environment
+ Create a safe, productive team environment within their crews and encourage teamwork on the entire jobsite including with our subcontractor crews.
+ Promote understanding and the application of the company Policies and Procedures and assist in the development of specific jobsite rules.
+ Contribute to the overall jobsite planning process, estimate resources needed for project completion, and ensure timely completion of work. This includes working with all of our other partners on the project.
+ Prioritizes and plans work activities and approaches work in a methodical manner.
+ Ensure that their work area(s) are organized at all times and promote good housekeeping on the entire jobsite.
+ Ensure work can continue when faced with adverse weather ( e.g. rain, wind, or snow), or other obstacles and develops contingency plans if needed
+ Manpower
+ Familiarize all employees that are new to the crew with the specific work area(s) and the work that are in progress.
+ Understand each of their crew member?s current competency level and identify areas that require improvement. Help them develop their career path through mentoring and training. Teach good work ethics.
+ Involve themselves and the crew members in new employee recruitment using the Story Referral Program.
+ Develop step level plans for putting each phase of work in place that they are responsible for and involve their crew members in the planning process.
+ Ensure that crew members understand what is expected of them by conducting pre-work meetings with their crews before starting work each day and when conditions change during the day.
+ Recommend corrective and disciplinary action for individual crew members when necessary.
+ Recommend promotion opportunities for individual crew members including pay adjustments.
+ Materials
+ Plan and schedule through the superintendent the delivery, handling, storage, staging and use of materials in the appropriate quantities that will be needed.
+ Understand the characteristics of the material and supplies being used (e.g. concrete, steel, lumber, fuels and etc.) and ensure that team members utilize proper procedures for handling, storing and staging and use of these materials and supplies.
+ Ensure that crew members are trained to install and use these materials and supplies.
+ Be familiar with the cost of these materials and supplies.
+ Tools
+ Plan and schedule through the superintendent the delivery, handling, storage and use of the correct small tools that will be required for each task.
+ Know the proper operation and safety precautions for each tool and demonstrate an interest in learning about new tools and technology.
+ Determine when specialty tools are needed.
+ Determine which tools will require a backup (e.g. a concrete vibrator).
+ Know how to utilize the tools so they will be as productive as possible.
+ Provide for the timely maintenance of and how to troubleshoot each piece of equipment.
+ Provide training for crew members on the proper use of each tool.
+ Equipment
+ Plan and schedule through the superintendent the delivery, handling, storage and use of the correct equipment that will be required for each task.
+ Know the capacity, proper operation and safety precautions for each piece of equipment (e.g. crane signals, rigging techniques and supporting soil requirements for cranes.)
+ Know how to utilize the equipment so it will be as productive as possible.
+ Provide for the timely maintenance of each piece of equipment.
+ Provide training for crew members on proper use of and or working around each piece of equipment.

Foremen are assigned to jobsites located across the state.Work Environment:While performing the job duties, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration, within OSHA standards. Job tasks are performed in close physical proximity to other people. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, extreme cold, and exposure to dust.Physical Demands:The employee will work in conditions of repetitive movement, bending or twisting, and using hands to lift, push, pull, carry, handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time, and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
