The City of Ames is conducting a recruitment to establish a Civil Service eligibility list for the Substation Electrician classification. The eligibility list will be valid for up to one year from the date of certification by the Ames Civil Service Commission and may be used to fill one or more vacancies in this classification. In addition, City of Ames Civil Service employees who have previously held Civil Service status in this classification and are interested in voluntarily demoting or laterally transferring into the current vacancy must submit their application by the deadline.
Constructs, maintains, and repairs electrical transmission and distribution system substations; performs related work as required.
Examples of Essential Job Functions:
Constructs, maintains, and repairs electrical transmission and distribution substation systems including conduit, wiring, bus work, circuit breakers, PTs, CTs, transformers, capacitor banks, and associated equipment; installs, removes, and maintains batteries, battery chargers, transformer and circuit breaker oil, voltage regulators and their controls, and metering and relay equipment; maintains and tests network vaults, substations, and underground services; performs work in a manner consistent with applicable safety policies, practices, and procedures; may perform a variety of tasks related to the operation of the electrical transmission and distribution system in an emergency situation; installs and maintains communication cable for SCADA system; operates laptop computer; operates digger derrick, bucket trucks, pickup trucks, and related equipment.

Other Job Functions: Cleans network vaults.
Education and Experience: Completion of a recognized substation electrician apprenticeship program.
Please attach a copy of your apprenticeship certification.
Licenses and Certificates: Must possess a valid driver's license; must obtain a valid type A Commercial Driver's License and any required endorsements within one month of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and materials used in electrical construction, installation, and repair; knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits, wiring systems, and transformer hookups; knowledge of the occupational hazards of the electrical trade and necessary safety precautions; knowledge of first aid and CPR; knowledge of all safety rules as stated in the adopted safety manual; knowledge in the use of computer-based word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
Skill in the use of a wide variety of electrical testing devices including volt meters, ammeters, ohm meters, watt meters, fault locators, meggers, power factor test units, vacuum bottle tester and other devices.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; ability to read and interpret electrical sketches, diagrams, and blueprints; ability to proficiently operate a computer, digger derrick, bucket trucks, pickup trucks, and related equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and other City employees.

Residence Requirement:
The required residence area is the area bordered by the Boone and Story County lines on the north and south, State Highway 65 on the east; and on the west, County Road R27 north of Boone, and the Des Moines River south of Highway 30 to the Boone County line. Communities intersected by the borderlines, and Zearing, shall be considered within the area. The permitted residency area is that area inside the borderlines. The area adjacent to but outside the borderlines is not included. After completing his/her probationary period, a new employee shall, within six (6) months, reside within the residency area. The department head may allow an employee up to an additional six (6) months if the employee provides documentation of financial commitment to move within the residence area.
Internal Applicants:
Payment or transferred use of any accumulated compensatory time is subject to the discretion of the hiring department head. Internal candidates with accumulated compensatory time should consult with the hiring manager to determine how current compensatory time will be handled if transferring into a non-exempt position.
Selection Process:
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, an interview, and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.
E-Verify Process:
The City of Ames participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. All candidates who are offered a position with the City of Ames must complete Section 1 of Form I-9 along with the required proof of their right to work in the United States and proof of their identity prior to starting employment. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
