Student Trainee (Civil Engineering)

The Student Trainee (Civil Engineering) Pathways Intern will:
Assist with the inspection of highway construction projects with Division Transportation Engineers to see if the quality and progress of the work complies with the contract and State specifications, and to assist the State project engineer with design and construction problems. Assist the Division Engineer in writing engineering reports, describing the quantity and quality of the work observed and proposes appropriate recommendations to the engineer. Assist with performing program reviews and document findings in a wide variety of disciplines (engineering, planning, environment, etc.) working with the division office specialists. The reviews will be focused on identifying and eliminating significant statewide program deficiencies. Track data and maintain databases of varied Federal-aid performance data and draft reports as requested. Participate in initiatives/activities as required by the Division Performance Plan to implement programs, products, processes, or technologies that contribute to the achievement of the agency's National Strategic Goals. The ideal candidate will be a student local to either Ames (IA) or Madison (WI), which provides the opportunity for simultaneously working and taking classes that support the development of the intern. This position has an education requirement. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package. Official transcripts will be required prior to a final offer of employment. GS-3 Completion of one academic year of post-high school study. GS-4 Completion of two academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree. GS-5 Completion of four academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's degree or four academic years of pre-professional studyGS-7 Completion of one academic year of graduate level education; OR bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement as defined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook; OR five academic years of pre-professional study.Superior Academic Achievement- In the upper one-third of graduating class; OR a GPA of 3.0 or higher out of 4.0, as recorded on official transcript, or based on courses completed during final 2 years of curriculum; OR a GPA of 3.5 or higher out of 4.0, based on average of required courses completed in major or required courses in major completed during the final 2 years of curriculum. Qualifying education from colleges and universities in foreign countries must be evaluated in terms of equivalency to that acquired in U.S. colleges and universities. Applicants educated in whole or in part in foreign countries must submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts, to an accredited private organization for an equivalency evaluation of course work and degree.
